Preparing for the Test

Our team of over 30 Observers is instrumental in helping Associates prepare for the IAM Advanced Driving Test. Observers are IAM Members who have undergone further training to qualify them to mentor Associates. Preparation for the test is not a teaching programme and our approach is very much a practical one comprising:
  • An initial briefing on advanced driving techniques
  • A demonstration drive with one of our Senior Observers
  • Monthly Observed Drives in the Associate's own car.
We believe this provides the optimum time for Observers and Associates to work together on the practical issues and individual Associate's performance. After each drive, the Observer and Associate discuss the points raised during the drive and the Associate is provided with a written report with action points.identifying aspects for practice and improvement over the next month.

Some Associates may be learning new skills, some may need to eradicate bad habits they have picked up since passing their Driving Test. Most of our Associates who put in the required practice are ready to take the test after four to six runs but those who require a little longer are not disadvantaged.
